Challenge

Low-income displaced families need alternative housing solutions that are environmentally sustainable and appropriate for the local climate and needs.

Solution

UNHCR and the Federal University of Roraima will test new construction techniques to build housing units with locally available, sustainable materials that can withstand local conditions and provide better protection for families.

Impact

Fewer emergency shelters used, refugees and migrants in settlements close to the Venezuelan border learn sustainable construction techniques, environmentally friendly construction methods to improve transitional shelters identified.

Other information

The newly developed bioconstruction techniques had a lower environmental footprint than existing shelters and improved thermal regulation.
 
The pilot homes were constructed in UNHCR's sustainability centre and serve as models for further education and awareness raising.
 
The techniques also considered cultural preferences, developing homes more suited to the preferences and needs of indigenous communities.
 
Testing alternative local materials demonstrated how these innovative shelters can achieve multiple co-benefits, advancing climate adaptiveness, adequacy of homes, and contribution to local economies.
