UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Kuwait, organized an advocacy event titled "Solidarity with Refugees: Voices from the Field" in collaboration with Argana Hotels and Resorts, on the sidelines of marking World Refugee Day.
The event, hosted by Mövenpick Hotel & Resort Al Bida’a, shed light on the resilience of refugees and displaced people. Humanitarian experts from UNHCR shared powerful stories from their years of working in challenging humanitarian situations. The gathering brought together the UN team in Kuwait, staff and board members of Argana Hotels and Resorts, and other supporters and influential community figures. Attendees and speakers engaged in discussions on showcasing solidarity and help forcibly displaced people around the world. The event also aimed to enhance collaboration between private sector entities, like Argana Hotels and Resorts, and UNHCR in supporting humanitarian efforts as part of their corporate social responsibility.
In his opening remarks, Michael Jabbour, Argana Cluster General Manager, stressed on the importance of joining efforts with UNHCR in advocating for humanitarian causes, and added: “At Argana Resorts & Hotels, in proud collaboration with Accor, we believe in using our platforms and voices to create meaningful impact. On this World Refugee Day, we stand united with UNHCR in honoring the strength and resilience of millions of refugees around the world. Our partnership with UNHCR reflects our unwavering commitment to social responsibility, and we are proud to contribute to raising awareness and supporting the humanitarian efforts that make a real difference.”
On her part, Nisreen Rubaian, UNHCR Representative to the State of Kuwait, stated: “We believe in standing up for dignity, diversity, and the right to rebuild. That’s why we look at you to support the UN Refugee Agency; Since 1950, we have faced multiple crises on multiple continents, and provided vital protection and assistance to refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced and many of whom have nobody left to turn to.”
The event concluded with a story sharing session from the field by UNHCR personnel Nisreen Rubaian – UNHCR Representative to the State of Kuwait and Rami Shishan – Head of Partnerships, followed by an interactive Q&A session by the attendees.
This year, UNHCR marked World Refugee Day under the tagline “Solidarity with Refugees” At a moment of global uncertainty, of narratives that prioritize self-interest over shared humanity, with the number of forcibly displaced people at a record high exceeding 123 million and brutal aid funding cuts putting millions of lives at risk, it is more urgent than ever to break through the noise, raise our voice and show solidarity with refugees.
