When Russia’s full-scale invasion reached her home in Mykolaiv, Tatiana did not want to flee. “I was hesitant to leave Ukraine,” she says. “This is my home, my town.” But the war was too brutal for this 36-year-old mother of two to stand. “When the attacks began to intensify,” she recalls, “we couldn’t eat or sleep; I decided that I had to get my children out of this nightmare. Last winter, UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, supported the Government of the Republic of Moldova in procuring firewood for refugees and vulnerable local communities in Moldova to enable them to cope with rising heating prices during wintertime. UNHCR supplied 2,100 cubic meters of firewood through the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Moldova to be distributed, free of charge, in rural areas where people may not have access to gas or electric heating.
