Denmark renews commitment to support Ukrainian refugees in Moldova
CHISINAU, Moldova — UNHCR warmly welcomes a new contribution of over USD 790,000 from the Government of Denmark, strengthening the humanitarian response for Ukrainian refugees arriving in Moldova as well as for those who continue to live in the country four years after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The funding arrives at a critical time as humanitarian needs remain high, yet international support is declining.
Moldova continues to host one of the highest per‑capita refugee populations in Europe, despite facing its own economic pressures. Since the full-scale war started, more than 2.4 million refugees from Ukraine have crossed into Moldova seeking safety. As of March 2026, approximately 140,000 Ukrainian refugees remain in the country – most of them women, children, older people, and people with disabilities, who are particularly vulnerable to socio-economic hardship.
Denmark’s renewed support will enable UNHCR to sustain critical, frontline assistance throughout 2026. This includes essential protection services such as legal assistance, information, referral programs, for refugees with heightened risks—women and girls, older persons, people with disabilities, Roma and LGBTQ+ refugees, and individuals living in remote rural areas or on the Left Bank of the Dniester River. The contribution will also support the most vulnerable refugees to meet basic needs such as food, rent, medicines, utilities, and transportation through the Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance program.
“This funding allows us to stay present for those who need us most—women, children, older people, and others facing heightened risks” said Katja Saha, Country Representative a.i. of UNHCR Moldova. “Denmark’s continued solidarity strengthens our ability to provide meaningful protection services and help people rebuild their lives with dignity.”
UNHCR expresses its deep gratitude to the Government and people of Denmark for their continued solidarity in response to the Ukraine crisis. Sustained support remains critical to protect hard-won gains and prevent further deterioration of humanitarian conditions.
