The Sergio Vieira de Mello Academic Chair Conference “Inclusive Academic Environments: Futures for Displaced in Moldova” will bring together representatives of universities, government institutions, and the United Nations to advance inclusion and resilience through higher education.
Hosted by the Ion Creangă State Pedagogical University in partnership with the Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the event is organized with the support of the UN Refugee Agency in the Republic of Moldova. The conference marks the inaugural convening of the Sergio Vieira de Mello Academic Network —— a national platform that brings together six higher education institutions committed to promoting the academic inclusion of refugees.
Since 2022, the Republic of Moldova has hosted refugees from Ukraine, many of whom continue to seek opportunities to access education, including higher education. In this context, promoting the inclusion of refugee students within national education systems, including Moldova’s university system, has become a strategic priority. The event will bring together rectors, professors, researchers, students, and humanitarian partners to exchange views on how academic environments can become more inclusive and responsive to the needs of refugee learners. Building on this exchange, the Conference will provide a platform to discuss institutional approaches, share lessons learned, and present the results of projects implemented under the 2025 SVMC grants. Finally, discussions will focus on identifying common challenges, highlighting good practices, and strengthening the role of universities in advancing inclusion and resilience.
The event is open to academics, students, civil society organizations, and institutions working in the areas of education, inclusion, and refugee response.
