UNHCR welcomes Germany’s renewed contribution to support Ukrainian refugees in the Republic of Moldova in 2026
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, warmly welcomes Germany’s renewed contribution of EUR 2.6 million to support Ukrainian refugees in Moldova throughout 2026. This latest funding builds on Germany’s strong and longstanding partnership with UNHCR in responding to the displacement caused by the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, further reinforcing its commitment to supporting refugees and displaced people worldwide. The new contribution will strengthen UNHCR capacity to deliver temporary protection, promote refugee self‑reliance, and advance long‑term integration initiatives in Moldova.
Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine in February 2022, more than 2.3 million refugees have passed through Moldova. As of December 2025, the country hosts around 148,000 Ukrainian refugees, of whom 86,585 have been granted Temporary Protection. Currently, one in three refugees in Moldova is an older person or a person with a disability; 64 per cent are women and girls, and nearly half are children, underscoring the critical need for sustained support.
Germany’s support has been pivotal in enabling UNHCR to strengthen the capacity of Moldovan authorities to provide multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian refugees. This includes cash assistance, child protection services, targeted support for vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, Roma refugees, and older persons. Among the activities implemented thanks to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office and other donors, UNHCR also strengthened national, local and civil society capacity to prevent and respond to gender‑based violence, delivering trainings to 428 professionals, and provided technical expertise on key legislative processes, including the extension of Temporary Protection, citizenship and migration reforms.
Globally, Germany remains one of UNHCR’s largest donors and a key partner in protecting refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons, and stateless populations. In Moldova, Germany’s total financial support to UNHCR’s response has reached about EUR 18 million since 2022. This year’s contribution will further support the implementation of the 2025–2026 Refugee Response Plan, which aims to reinforce legal and institutional frameworks enabling refugees to access residency, documentation, health care, education, and social protection.
