Fuocoammare

Dr. Pietro Bartolo, the protagonist of Fuocoammare, an awardwinning documentary on the Island of Lampedusa, was present for a discussion onhis work and rescue operation during the Valletta film Festival.

Dr. Bartolo is the head of health services in Lampedusa and aman at the forefront of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. Together withSalvatore Schirmo, Director of the Italian Cultural Centre, Neil Falzon, AditusFoundation, and Fabrizio Ellul, UNHCR Malta, Dr. Bartolo shared his thoughts onasylum seekers attempting the dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean Sea.

The documentary was screened at Fort St Elmo in Valletta on the8 June. Beat Schuler, Representative to Malta, and Wilfried Buchhorn, Head of Office for the UNHCR Liasion Office to EASO, took the opportunity to raise awarenesson the #withrefugees campaign.

The #WithRefugees petition will be delivered to UN headquarters inNew York ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting on September 19. Thepetition asks governments to:

· Ensure every refugeechild gets an education.

· Ensure every refugeefamily has somewhere safe to live.

· Ensure every refugeecan work or learn new skills to make a positive contribution to theircommunity.
