Italy

At the end of 2021, Italy hosted over 165,000 refugees and asylum-seekers. This included over 12,000 unaccompanied children in reception facilities. Most persons of concern came from Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Mali, Somalia and Gambia.

In Italy, UNHCR works with the government, sister UN agencies and non-governmental organizations to uphold the fundamental rights of people forced to flee and develop lasting solutions that ensure they can build better futures for themselves and their communities. UNHCR’s work in Italy focuses on protection and advocacy, including, among others, actions to promote adequate standards of reception and integration opportunities, ensure specific protection and support for children and persons with specific needs, and end statelessness.
