UNHCR Mourns The Passing Of Irene Fernandez

UNHCR is deeply saddened by the passing of Irene Fernandez, one of Malaysia's foremost and most respected human rights activists.

Irene had devoted her life to upholding human rights in an array of areas - including upholding the rights of marginalised communities including migrants, refugees, People Living With HIV/AIDS, and sex workers. She fought for the voiceless and the oppressed.

Our heartfelt condolences go to her family, relatives, friends, and colleagues. We share in their loss, and the loss Malaysia has experienced that a human rights warrior is no more.

Irene's indefatigable spirit to fight for all that is just and fair and right, even in the face of great opposition and adversity, is a legacy that lives on in the people she has inspired and the millions of people whose lives have changed because of her tireless work.

May she rest in peace.
