World Refugee Day 2003 National Activity Plan: Armenia

World Refugee Day 2003 National Activity Plan: Armenia

1 April 2003

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

An open-air concert will take place in a popular park in Yerevan, with young Armenian musicians and singers performing for free. The concert's organisers include the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth's Affairs, the Mayor's Office of Yerevan, and a youth NGO, Areg-73.

UNHCR will collaborate with the NGO, Project Harmony, to create a website for young refugees, who will be trained in web design and drafting so that they can contribute stories on refugee issues. Young Armenians are encouraged to join the group to ensure a high level of interaction between refugees and locals.

A radio station for youth, Maxliberty, will broadcast live debates on the issues of refugee youth. The local print media will also feature stories about refugee youth in Armenia.

A poster competition will be held among refugees and young nationals. The best poster will be printed and disseminated among schools, universities, NGOs, government agencies and other organisations.
