World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Ireland

World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Ireland

20 June 2004

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

For World Refugee Day, UNHCR Ireland and the Reception & Integration Agency (of the Irish Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform) are holding a press conference with refugees who have resettled in Ireland or were granted refugee status through the national asylum procedure, or who have chosen to return to their home countries.

UNHCR hopes to highlight the positive contribution refugees have made to Ireland and their experience of integrating in Irish society, and their aspirations to return home. The agency is also taking the opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the resettlement of Vietnamese refugees in Ireland, their achievements and their contributions.
