UNHCR supports Slovakia’s efforts to protect refugees, asylum-seekers, and stateless people by providing assistance, monitoring protection needs, and promoting long-term solutions.
UNHCR has been operating in Slovakia since 1994, with its main office located in Bratislava. Working closely with local and municipal authorities, UN agencies, and national partners, UNHCR plays a crucial role in supporting the government's efforts to protect Ukrainian and other refugees. We assist in providing temporary protection and ensuring access to essential services for displaced individuals. Through monitoring, we identify people with specific needs, allowing us to address issues, provide targeted support, and make referrals to relevant services and resources.
In addition to our main office in Bratislava, UNHCR maintains a field office in Košice, strategically located close to the Ukrainian border. This field office enables border monitoring and enhances our ability to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of refugees entering Slovakia from Ukraine.
UNHCR's efforts in Slovakia extend beyond immediate assistance. We are committed to finding long-term solutions for refugees, asylum-seekers, and stateless persons in the country. This includes advocating for their rights, promoting their integration into Slovak society, and working towards ending statelessness.
