Coordination of actors in the humanitarian response is important to ensure that there is no duplication of activities. This also ensures that protection gaps are addressed, that humanitarians work efficently and it guarantees protection mainstreaming in the humanitarian response. Coordination utilizes the rights based approach for the optimization of resources to provide timely and efficient intervention to refugees, internally displaced people or returnees.
Monitoring risks & contingency planning
Preparing for an emergency involves risk monitoring, scenario-based contingency planning, and establishing how to deliver assistance and protection. UNHCR leads the Protection Sector Working Group and co-leads the Camp Coordination Camp Management/Shelter & Non-Food Item Sectors in Nigeria with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
UNHCR works within these sectors to support the government’s efforts.
Coordination serves UNHCR’s mandate to find solutions for people forced to flee. It is an important part of our work.
It allows us as a humanitarian community to avoid duplication of efforts.
