UNHCR Saddened by the Loss of Three Returnee Afghans in Flash Flooding

UNHCR is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of three Afghan nationals, including a child, who lost their lives in flash flooding while travelling towards the Torkham border. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their family and loved ones during this difficult time.

This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the risks faced by vulnerable people on the move. UNHCR continues to call for vulnerable Afghans—including those with international protection needs—to be exempted from the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan and to have access to procedures that enable their individual circumstances to be assessed.

UNHCR also reiterates that returns are most sustainable when they take place in safety and dignity, with appropriate safeguards in place for those most at risk.

Pakistan has a long and proud history of generosity in hosting Afghan refugees over the past four decades. UNHCR hopes this humanitarian tradition will continue, ensuring that those in need of international protection are able to access safety and protection in line with international principles.
