UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and Qatar Charity (QC) have signed a renewed Letter of Intent (LoI) to extend their support through Islamic Philanthropy collaborations, underscoring the vital role of Zakat and Sadaqah, in addressing global humanitarian needs.
The LoI was signed by QC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Yousuf bin Ahmad Al-Kuwari, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, at QC’s headquarters in Doha.
As part of the LOI, Qatar Charity has committed to contributing US $5 million over 2024–2025 to support refugees and internally displaced persons. This funding will strengthen a range of sectors including Cash Assistance, Livelihoods, Shelter, and Core Relief Items across several operations. The collaboration would also include capacity building activities for Qatar Charity’s staff in Doha and field operations through targeted training activities.
On this occasion, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said: “Today I was honoured to sign UNHCR’s new cooperation agreement with Qatar Charity yet another positive step in a long-standing partnership which has allowed both organizations to support refugees and displaced people in some of the most challenging crises around the world.”
On his part, Chief Executive Officer, Yousuf bin Ahmad Al-Kuwari, reiterated QC’s commitment to supporting forcibly displaced persons through UNHCR adding The CEO of Qatar Charity “This partnership will make our cooperation very strong, and we will continue to work hand in hand to support the needs of people. We have established deep and strategic relations with UNHCR, and together we are committed to enhancing the well-being of refugees and displaced persons in numerous countries”.
UNHCR’s Representative in Qatar, Ahmed Mohsen, lauding Qatar Charity’s partnership with UNHCR, and said: “While many refugees are living in destitution and hardship, their humanitarian needs remain dire and widespread. We are grateful for Qatar Charity’s interest and commitment through Zakat contributions, and we are positive that it will help support some of the most vulnerable forcibly displaced persons around the world.”
Together, QC and UNHCR aim to further increase the impact of Islamic Philanthropy by supporting UNHCR’s various programs assisting refugees and internally displaced persons. These efforts extend to emergencies in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan, Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Yemen, and other operations.
