UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and Qatar Charity (QC) announced a Zakat contribution of 3,689,369 Qatari Riyals to support Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
This contribution will assist more than 6,600 Syrian refugee families in Lebanon impacted by the difficult socio-economic situation in Lebanon, posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, hyperinflation, and limited livelihood opportunities.
With this contribution, UNHCR will provide the most vulnerable refugee families with cash assistance grants, to help them secure their most urgent needs, such as shelter, food, medicine, and other necessities.
“With thanks to Qatar Charity, UNHCR will be able to support Syrian refugee families in Lebanon keep afloat during these challenging times” said Ayat El Dewary, UNHCR Qatar Representative.
“We will continue working with UNHCR to provide the most vulnerable refugees with urgent humanitarian assistance and ensure dignified living conditions” said Mr. Nawaf al-Hammadi, Chief Global Programs Officer at Qatar Charity.
This contribution will support UNHCR’s humanitarian response in Lebanon, a country that has been struggling with a deep economic and financial crisis since late 2019, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, the devastating explosion in Beirut port as well as a protracted refugee situation. All of which had an on impact the refugee population, leading to an exceptional rise in extreme poverty among refugees.
