On 28 October 2021, the UNHCR Representative in BiH, Lucie Gagne, together with the Prime Minister of the Una-Sana Canton (USC), Mustafa Ruznic handed over a new van to the Red Cross of Una Sana Canton.
The vehicle was procured within the project “Enhancing Social Cohesion in Communities Hosting People on the Move”, funded by the European Commission – EU Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (EU FPI) and it will be used for all regular activities of providing support and assistance to population in need.
“With donation of the van to Red Cross of Una Sana Canton we want to support the capacities for better implementation of outreach activities for both the local population and the population of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers outside reception center, but also support efforts of the Una Sana Canton Government and the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina to ensure coordination of all international and national organizations outreach activities,” said Lucie Gagne, the UNHCR Representative in BiH.
President of the Red Cross of the Una-Sana Canton (USC) Husein Klicic said the donation of this van is just a continuation of the successful cooperation with UNHCR with which Red Cross has a long history.
“I would like to thank you on behalf of the people who will benefit from this donation, with the message that if we save one life it is as if we have saved the whole world.” Mr. Klicic concluded.
The USC Prime Minister, Mustafa Ruznic expressed his appreciation to UNHCR for recognizing the priorities, not only when it comes to mixed movements, but also other social categories.
Some areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina, such as the Una-Sana and Sarajevo Cantons, have been particularly affected by the mixed migration movement, which has overstretched their capacities and raised concerns among local communities.
Within this context, UNHCR, other UN sister agencies, the EU, national and international partners, and other stakeholders have provided local support and continued to advocate strongly for increased solidarity and responsibility-sharing throughout the country.
