It was jointly organized by the Armenian National Paralympic Committee (ANPC) and UNHCR Armenia, supported by esteemed partners, including the Government of Armenia, Yerevan Municipality, and the Embassy of France.
Today, the opening ceremony of the 20th Para Sports Festival of Armenia took place at Yerevan State Sports College of Olympic Reserves, as tribute to inclusiveness, unity among and resilience by refugee and non-refugee para athletes, as well as their host communities.
Athletes, dignitaries, diplomats, and guests gathered for an inspiring ceremony that underscored the power of sports and inclusivity.
The event began with a heartfelt welcome by para-athlete Gohar Navasardyan, who expressed deep emotion at the sight of athletes. “Today, as we open the National Para Games, we honour the courage and perseverance of our para-athletes. It’s truly moving to witness their dedication and spirit“.
Mr. Hakob Abrahamyan, President of National Paralympic Committee of Armenia said emotionally. “We must rally together, continuing to provide support and resources to empower our athletes. I extend heartfelt thanks to the Government, UNHCR, Embassy of France in Armenia, Yerevan Municipality, and all supporters for their unwavering commitment. Together, let’s champion inclusivity and celebrate the boundless spirit of para-athletes. Thank you.”
Mr. Daniel Danielyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia, spoke passionately about the significance of inclusive sports initiatives during the opening ceremony. Expressing gratitude to the organizers and drawing attention to the motivating presence of refugee athletes, he emphasized the importance of expanding support.
“We are thrilled to support the Para Sport Festival, which not only celebrate athletic excellence but also promote diversity and inclusion in Armenia,” remarked Mr. Danielyan. His words echoed a heartfelt commitment to fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive through sports.
Ms. Françoise Jacob, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Armenia, emphasized the role of sports in fostering social cohesion and empowering individuals of all abilities. “Sport has the unique ability to break down barriers and unite communities,” noted Ms. Jacob.
Ms. Gwenolenn Le Couster, Senior Emergency Officer and Officer in charge of UNHCR, underscored the profound significance of the para games as a platform for refugee and host community athletes, praising their resilience and determination. She extended heartfelt gratitude to all partners involved, emphasizing their crucial support in making the Para Sport Festival possible. Ms. Le Couster expressed optimism and eagerness for the successful unfolding of the games, highlighting the collaborative effort aimed at showcasing the talents of refugee and host community para-athletes and fostering inclusivity.
The ceremony reached an emotional peak with national flag of Armenia being hoisted by para-athletic Khoren Tsatsuryan, world champion of para weightlifting and moving rendition of the Armenian national anthem performed by Paros choir of persons with disabilities.
“Today, through our voices, we celebrate the strength found in inclusivity and diversity,” expressed the Armen Alaverdyan of the Paros Choir after the event.
This was followed by a stirring musical performance by refugee para-athlete Ms. Lusine Davudyan, whose songs resonated deeply with the audience, who also joined her by singing some of the lyrics.
At the opening ceremony of the National Para Sports Festival in Armenia, the esteemed para-athlete Ms. Greta Vardanyan who has qualified to represent Armenia at Paris Paralympics scheduled in August 2024, were introduced with great honour. Amidst cheers and applause, these athletes stood as symbols of courage and determination, representing Armenia’s spirit in adaptive sports.
“The Para Games are not just about competition; they are about proving that disability is not a barrier to achievement,” Ms. Greta Vardanyan affirmed when talking to UNHCR during the games.
The opening ceremony was concluded with a demo training session of adaptive football, facilitated by the Adaptive Football Armenia in cooperation with Football Federation of Armenia, where children with developmental disabilities showcased their skills on the field. 12 children participated motivated by their coach Daniel Hakobyan and psychologist Ms. Nelly Parsadanyan, playing in the field. Children adorned the jersey by Nike, UNHCR private sector partner.
With inclusivity at its core, the event welcomes over 120 participants, including 20 refugees, embodying Armenia’s commitment to unity and empowerment through athletics, competing in adaptive sports like chess, powerlifting, tennis, boccia, wheelchair racing and wheelchair basketball. As the Para Games unfold, spectators are invited to witness the incredible talents of athletes in adaptive sports like football, highlighting the limitless potential and resilience of participants.
