Muazzez Ersoy supports the "International Mine Awareness Day" campaign

The United Nations High Comissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Good Will Ambassador representing Turkey, singer Muazzez Ersoy, is supporting the International Mine Awareness Day campaign which begins on April 4th. Ersoy was filmed in a public service announcement for the campaign.

In 2011, the Colombian civil organization Arc Angels started a global awareness campaign entitled “Lend Your Leg” http://www.lendyourleg.org/ which will continue throughout 2012 and is being supported by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS). The UNMAS team based in New York requested that all UNHCR good will ambassadors participate in the public service announcements for promotion of the 2012 campaign. Pertaining to this request, along with a very short video clip, instructions with relevant photographs were included.

These public service announcements will be broadcast in Turkey and throughout the world by international media agencies. The goal of these public service announcements is to create awareness that land mines continue to afflict pain and suffering, they are weapons which threaten the lives of innocent civilians, they are just as dangerous in times of peace as they are in times of war, they target individuals regardless of identity, age, language, belief,  or opinion.

Since 2007, as a United Nations High Comissioner for Refugees' good will ambassador , Muazzez Ersoy has worked to increase awareness on a number of campaigns. Muazzez Ersoy, along with Angelina Jolie is one of the UNHCR's 8 good will ambassadors. The other good will ambassadors are Adel Imam, Barbara Hendricks, George Dalaras, Julien Clero, Osvaldo Laport and Jesus Vazquez.
