World Refugee Day 2002: Uganda
National commemorations were held at the Rhino Camp for Sudanese refugees, in Arua District. A number of dignitaries participated in the events, including the second Deputy Prime Minister who is also the Minister for Disaster Preparedness & Refugees, the Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, the Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness and refugees, the German, Norwegian and US Embassies, members of the Parliament, other government officials, WFP, IOM, UNDP, and UNICEF.
A number of refugee groups presented songs, poems, dramas, dance and a march by members of community organisations (mostly women). The theme of World Refugee Day was highlighted at all levels, both in the guests' speeches and the performances by refugee groups.
