Czech Republic

The Czech Republic has one of the largest refugee populations overall and per capita in the EU and is one of the key destination countries for refugees from Ukraine. In total, over 530,000 Ukrainians were granted Temporary Protection status in the country by the end of June 2023, and almost 350,000 had an active status by that time.

UNHCR has been present in the Czech Republic since 1992, working closely with government counterparts, national institutions, and local partners to ensure refugees and asylum-seekers essential rights, access to basic services, and legal and protection assistance.

The office located in Prague is part of the UNHCR Regional Representation for Central Europe, based in Budapest, Hungary. Directly and through partners, we support government-led efforts through a multisectoral response with a focus on protection, and we provide much-needed assistance to people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. We are also committed to creating public support for asylum-seekers, refugees, and stateless persons.
