World Refugee Day 2003: Bosnia and Herzegovina

From June 28 to July 3, UNHCR was part of an exhibition titled, "Art Camp 'Between ... ' ", held on the ground of the future Ars Aevi Museum for Contemporary Art. The exhibition gathered the works of young artists from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina in 16 tents, with a 17th tent set aside to mark World Refugee Day.

"The idea of exhibiting artworks on the grounds of the future museum in UNHCR tents designed for refugees, for people living temporarily in tents, suspended in between space and between time while their houses are not being built, is symbolic ... of the position of young artists who have nowhere to show their works, as is the reality of Bosnia and Herzegovina in which life as a refugee is part of everyday experience," said Asja Mandic, the curator of the exhibition.

"The tent, as a place to live and work in, a place to set up and exhibit artworks, highlights the issue of the temporary space, the space in between the reality of Bosnia and Herzegovina in art, culture and society as a whole."

Inside the UNHCR tent, video screenings were held of the World Refugee Day documentary, "Facing the Future", in which one of the refugee youth's stories was filmed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also on display in the tent were UNHCR posters and other promotional materials.
