World Refugee Day 2003 National Activity Plan: Australia

World Refugee Day 2003 National Activity Plan: Australia

1 April 2003

UNHCR staff register refugees at the Douma registration center on the outskirts of Damascus. Registering with UNHCR ensures that the most vulnerable refugees receive aid.

NGOs, local councils, declared "Refugee Towns", schools and community organisations will receive toolkits from UNHCR to help them organise local World Refugee Day events.

UNHCR will run a media campaign. The national newspaper, The Australian, will publicise World Refugee Day events through a one-page advertisement on June 20. The World Refugee Day message will be broadcast in many different languages on the ethnic radio station, SBS, on the same day. UNHCR will collaborate also with the youth radio station, JJJ, to promote refugee youth issues.

The national association, Australia for UNHCR, will hold a lunch or dinner event to celebrate World Refugee Day and to raise funds.
