World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Tajikistan

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

UNHCR, with the support of local authorities, will organise a sports event in Kumsangir for Tajik returnee children. Teams from five districts of Khatlon province will participate in games, such as volleyball, table tennis, badminton, and relay races. All participants will be given World Refugee Day T-shirts and gifts.
A World Refugee Day celebration will take place at the Social Centre for Refugees, including an exhibition by Afghan refugees, cultural performances and traditional food. Several Afghan refugee students from the Art College in Dushanbe will exhibit their work.
