UNHCR Records of the Central Registry

The Central Registry was responsible for the opening and routing of correspondence and for the filing of working papers and official records from 1951 to 1994. These records document the full range of UNHCR activities for nearly a half a century and as such provide an indispensable introduction to the work of the organization.

Subgroup: General Series: General Registry Code: 1/1 (Registry, 1951-1970) Dates: 11-1950/02-1975 Extent: 160 cm of textual records Scope: Series consists of a variety of general files on issues such as plans for significant anniversaries (e.g., the 20th anniversary of UNHCR; Nansen Centenary), the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nansen medal, the Frans Kooijman Memorial Fund, and the liquidation of the Nansen Office in the Near East. Series also includes some files related to analysis of the UNHCR, its "good offices" policy, and its policies with respect to liberation movements. Date Notes: Most of the series is missing. The Registry classification scheme lists many more files than those held by the Archives. Arrangement: The Registry added files to this series as the need arose. Files were assigned the next sequential numeric code within the 1/1 series (in the form 1/1/#). Languages: English and French; some German Finding Aids: A file list is available.
