High Commissioner in Davos for World Economic Forum

Briefing notes

High Commissioner in Davos for World Economic Forum

29 January 1999

The High Commissioner left Geneva last night for Davos, to participate in the World Economic Forum. On Sunday evening she will leave for an official trip to Germany on 1 and 2 February. During her visit to Bonn she will meet with Chancellor Schroeder as well as with Foreign Minister Fischer and Justice Minister Daeubler-Gmelin, and senior officials from the Interior Ministry and Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development. She will also have a chance to meet with the German government's Bosnia Return Coordinator, the Federal Commissioner for Aliens' Affairs, key parliamentarians and representatives of German non-governmental organizations. The visit to Germany is of particular importance as Germany currently holds the EU Presidency and remains Europe's primary asylum country. In 1998, Germany received one-third of all asylum applications lodged in countries of the European Union.
