Unrestricted funding empowers UNHCR with its mandate to support the most vulnerable people forced to flee. Tachavejnukul decided that providing his support in this manner was the best way to help UNHCR reach those who need assistance the most.
Mr. Wanchai Tachavejnukul strongly believes in helping refugees around the world through distributing of his wealth. This philosophy has been a part of his life since his childhood, when his family opened their home to a refugee. Mr. Tachavejnukul visited refugee camps during the 1980’s Indo-Chinese refugee crisis and saw at first-hand the impact of fleeing one’s home. Having never forgotten this experience, he contacted UNHCR in 2017 to learn more about the issues faced by refugees and offered his support.
Since Mr. Tachavejnukul’s first general donation to UNHCR six years ago, his commitment to refugees has increased. Today his contributions enable UNHCR to implement some of its essential core priorities, which are often forgotten or overlooked when the next emergency or crisis hits the headlines. These include, ensuring that unaccompanied children receive the necessary support to be reintegrated into their new communities. Mr. Tachavejnukul’s gifts also enable UNHCR to plan effectively and prepare for unforeseen situations.
In 2019, Mr. Tachavejnukul visited Syrian refugees in Jordan with UNHCR, an experience that has motivated him to work even harder in his support of the people under UNHCR’s protection.
“UNHCR is an international organization that can be trusted. They always take real actions in the field which have made me decide to give long term support. They come up with great initiatives bringing donors like me closer to the cause while making a difference to the lives of refugees, displaced people and stateless people.” stated Mr. Tachavejnukul.
