Protection is at the heart of UNHCR's work. The organisation works with the Government of Nigeria and partners to safeguard the rights of refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced people, refugee returnees and stateless persons, ensuring they can live in safety and dignity while accessing the services they need.
UNHCR strengthens national protection systems through community-based protection, protection monitoring, early warning mechanisms, refugee status determination and legal identity. The organisation also promotes the inclusion of forcibly displaced people in national health, education and social protection systems, helping them exercise their rights while fostering resilience and peaceful coexistence with host communities.
