Donor Stories
Even in the most difficult times, we have seen people rising up to the challenge with kindness: Teachers looking out for their students. Communities coming together like never before. Donors giving out of their hearts to ensure that the most vulnerable are not left behind.
UNHCR’s life-saving work is made possible largely because of the commitment and generosity of individual donors. These are their stories.
Ethel Reyes, a UNHCR regular donor since 2017, has long believed in the power of helping others. From a young age, she found ways to support those less fortunate—a trait that stayed with her into adulthood. Eight years ago, when she came across a UNHCR booth at a mall, she did not hesitate to give her first donation, marking the beginning of her continued commitment to people forced to flee.
Inspired by her parents and by former UNHCR Ambassador and Special Envoy Angelina Jolie, Ethel is driven by the hope that her support reaches not only far-flung communities across the Philippines, but also vulnerable families in other parts of the world.
“I hope that the forcibly displaced people can get back on their feet,” she shares. “Once they are able to rebuild their lives, I hope they can pay it forward.” Having helped improve the lives of countless families over the years, Ethel remains optimistic for the millions still facing displacement. “I hope that the forcibly displaced families don’t lose hope. Every day is a blessing. Even if we may not be content with our lives now, it will take time. We will eventually be able to overcome our challenges.”
Ethel’s kindness and generosity continue to be a guiding light for those navigating hardship and displacement. With the support of donors like her, refugees, internally displaced people, and stateless individuals are uplifted, empowered, and given a chance to be heard.
