Donor's Mission Report

Donor's Mission Report

24 April 2019

As part of our community of givers, we cannot stress how much your support matters to our field staff, and especially to the forcibly displaced families who have lost everything due to conflict, war, and natural disaster.

It is through your kindness and generosity that we are able to respond to displacement caused by disasters in the Philippines and across Asia. With your support, we are able to mobilize our staff on the ground and provide much needed life-saving aid at the onset of emergencies.

Read some stories of how your donations have helped UNHCR fulfill its mission to respond to emergencies and support the most vulnerable persons in their time of need.

Philippines

This March, more than 50,000 people were forced to flee due to fighting in Maguidanao, Sulu, and Lanao del Sur. Families in Mindanao are forced to leave their homes because of protracted displacement and clan conflict.

Through your help, UNHCR was able to mobilize quickly and provide much needed life-saving aid to families who lost everything. At the onset of the fighting last March, our field staff were able to deploy core-relief items such as solar lanterns and blankets to internally displaced families.

Indonesia

Last October 2018, a double disaster struck the island of Sulawesi leaving more than 80,000 people homeless. The earthquake and tsunami that rocked the island also left several thousands dead.

It is with help of donors like you that UNHCR was able to airlift tents and emergency supplies including sleeping mats, mosquito nets, and solar lamps, to those who lost everything due to the catastrophes that struck.

Syria

Last March marked the 8-year-conflict in Syria. While the fighting continues to rage on, UNHCR and its partners work tirelessly to provide medical care to the forcibly displaced families in Syria. It is with the support of our community of givers, that our staff on the ground ensures that refugee families’ can access proper health care.

At seven months, Reen was rushed to the hospital for a C-section giving birth to two little boys and a girl. Her children were only 1.2 kilograms each. The babies had to stay in incubators for six long nights until they were able to breathe on their own. The cost of care placed the family in a difficult situation. Through the emergency referrals, UNHCR was able to deliver medical care to the new family of seven.

As part of the community of givers, you are able to give displaced families a chance to live healthy lives.

Myanmar and Bangladesh

Kutapalong camp in Bangladesh is the world’s largest refugee settlement. As the displaced Rohingya families struggle to get back on their feet, UNHCR plays a role in providing them with water, food, and medical assistance, and shelter protection.

The needs of the families in Kutapalong camp are often identified with the help of community leaders like Samuda. She helped in identifying the areas where water is in short supply across camp. Through her support, UNHCR was able to build water pumps and latrines for the Rohingya refugees.

It is because of your donations that UNHCR is able to help provide much needed assistance to the Rohingya families who lost everything.

Emergency Relief in Numbers

Families who have been forced to flee are just like you and me. They had homes and jobs until conflict drove them to search for safety. Once they reach a point of safety, they are in need of the most basic necessities like tents, blankets, and sleeping mats to keep them safe. In 2018 alone, we were able to deliver millions of emergency kits to the forcibly displaced families.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of millions of refugees and internally displaced families.
