Empowering the most vulnerable towards climate action

Empowering the most vulnerable towards climate action

29 October 2021

Opportunities for greener practices and sustainable livelihood opportunities have empowered the most vulnerable in mitigating the effects of climate change in their communities.

“Maliit man o malaking project na dumarating sa amin ay thankful kami. Kaya nagpapasalamat kami dito sa tulong o project para amin na mga farmers galing sa UNHCR at CFSI. Ngayon na may solar dryer na kami, hindi na mabubulok yung mga ma harvest naming na mga produkto.”, says Badrodin Z. Solaiman, Project Committee Team Leader in Barangay Tamped, Kabacan, SGADA-BARMM.

Climate emergencies put the livelihood of vulnerable farmers at risk, wherein weather-related disasters has affected the productivity and income of farmers gravely. To reduce post-harvest losses in the community, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, together with Community Family Services International (CFSI), constructed a 15x10-meter solar dryer to promote more sustainable practice in farming and post-harvest processing of crops. An estimated 150 farmers benefited from this quick impact project.

With your support, UNHCR Philippines also implemented a livelihood support project in the form of farming machinery for the community in Brgy. Upper Pangancalan, Pigcawayan, Special Geographic Area (BARMM), with the support of the Australian Government and the partnership with Community and Family Services International (CFSI) and the BARMM Government.

Addressing the impact of climate change is a collective effort. Projects like these promote confidence, self-reliance and improve the overall protection situation of the most vulnerable families, especially as they face the threats of environmental disasters in their safety and livelihood. These projects have empowered the most vulnerable communities to enjoin in mitigating the effects of climate change.
