Mexico. Twin sisters and humanitarian workers

Haiti is grappling with a deepening humanitarian crisis, as insecurity and violence have internally displaced over 1 million people within the country as of the end of 2024.

In response to the escalating needs, UNHCR has expanded its operations, delivering protection services, legal aid, and emergency support to displaced families. We are also working to strengthen civil registration systems to help prevent and reduce statelessness.

The scale of the crisis is alarming: nearly half of Haiti’s 11.9 million people now depend on humanitarian assistance. Gang violence and political turmoil have made Haiti the country with the highest number of crime-related displacements globally.

In 2024 alone, UNHCR reported more than 423,000 Haitian refugees and asylum-seekers around the world, many of whom are undertaking perilous journeys across the Americas and the Caribbean.

The operations in Haiti are coordinated by the Panama multi-country office.
