Welcome to the UNHCR App trial

This page provides guidance for participants in our UNHCR Cash Assistance app trial.
migrateful

Thank you for joining UNHCR’s exclusive app trial.

By following these guidelines you’ll be able to share texts and photos with a Syrian refugee family in Jordan, offering them the chance to tell their own true story, in their own words, to someone who takes an active interest.

You’ll also receive in-app exclusive News Reports from UNHCR staff on the ground.

As part of the trial we do ask that you work with our market research partners, IPSOS during the app trial to let them know what your think of the whole experience.

If you’re already using the app but have a question please visit our FAQs page or send us an email at [email protected].

GETTING STARTED

This step by step guide should have all the information you need to set yourself up on the app and communicating with a refugee family. If you run into any difficulties you can contact us on [email protected] and we’ll do our best to sort everything out for you.

1. Downloading the app

If you haven’t already downloaded the app then here, below, are the links. Before you start downloading the app, be sure you are viewing this page via your mobile device.

  • bitly iphone
  • bitly Android

The app is designed for mobile phones (iPhone and Android) and tablets/iPads.

2. Register

Once you have downloaded the app and it’s on your homescreen, tap it and you’ll be presented with a few information screens.

Once you’ve read those you will be asked to enter the mobile phone number of the phone you’re using and then once you’ve done that successfully, we will send you a 6 digit one time passcode via SMS eg: 123456. (this is for security purposes)

Enter your passcode into your phone, accept the T&Cs, then proceed to the matching section of the app where you can choose the kind of refugee family you’d like to meet.

3. Your profile

We ask supporters and refugee families to introduce themselves to one another in the profile section of the app, so add as much information about yourselves into your profile as you can.

  • Add additional details in the free text 'About You' box.
  • Take a photo of yourself and your family or add a favourite image from your camera roll on your phone.

When you are matched with a family your details will be shared with the refugee family. You can change your profile any time after completing the registration process. See step 7.

PLEASE NOTE: For reasons of safeguarding for both parties we do not allow participants to share location, social media accounts.

4. Matching section

Both you and the refugee family are given the opportunity to make a selection of the kind of family you’d like to meet.

You can choose:

  • A family with children
  • A family with elderly relatives
  • A single parent family

You can also choose a family who have similar interests to you:

  • Food and recipes
  • Sport
  • Music and arts
  • Family

You can select more than one interest.

Once you have made these selections you will be ‘paired’ with a family which most closely matches your choices.

Please be aware that this is a trial of just twenty supporters and refugee families and as such, we may not be able to satisfy all of the matching criteria you have selected. You will always be matched with the same gender as yourself.

5. Meet your new friends

Shortly after completing the matching process you will be matched with a Syrian refugee family living in Jordan who are receiving Cash Assistance from UNHCR.

The App is an innovative and ground-breaking new way for refugees and supporters to meet as equals. Have a read about the family you’ve been matched with. You’ll be able to make a human connection that is not usually available through charitable support. You will not just hear what life is like for the family in Jordan, but actually be able to share stories with text and photos, creating a genuine two-way relationship.

6. Send your first message

We have provided some templates to help you get started. You can find them when you are using the writing timeline, just tap the word 'Template' next to the send button. See illustration.

You have a choice of 4 templates. Just choose one and personalise it. We do monitor all communications.

Please view our guidelines on the types of messages which would be returned to you.

7. Navigation

When you have completed registration, a navigation bar will appear at the bottom of the screen which will allow you to switch between the chat timeline, the Family’s profile, UNHCR News, more information about UNHCR in the About section and our FAQs and T&Cs

Thanks again for taking part in the trial. Your contribution to UNHCR and refugees is make a huge difference. If you have any queries or wish to leave the trial please contact us our via [email protected].
