Benin
The deterioration of the Sahel crisis is impacting northern Benin, where UNHCR supports vulnerable communities facing poverty, insecurity, and limited access to basic services through protection and humanitarian assistance.
The spillover of insecurity from the Central Sahel has increasingly affected northern Benin, triggering displacement and straining already vulnerable communities.
As of December 2024, the country hosts over 23,000 refugees and asylum-seekers – mainly from Burkina Faso and Togo – and nearly 9,000 internally displaced persons, with most residing in Alibori and Atacora.
UNHCR, in coordination with national authorities and partners, supports protection monitoring, emergency response, and resilience-building programmes that promote social cohesion in areas impacted by the crisis.
The operations in Benin are coordinated by the Côte d'Ivoire multi-country office.
