Germany
UNHCR works with Germany to uphold refugee rights, strengthen protection systems, and promote international solidarity amid shifting political and social dynamics.
Germany remains one of UNHCR’s most important partners globally, as Europe’s largest host country for refugees and one of UNHCR’s largest bilateral donors. UNHCR’s national fundraising efforts with the private sector are supported by its long-standing partner, UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe, based in Bonn.
Germany was one of the initial signatories to the 1951 Convention, and the UNHCR office in Germany was one of the first UNHCR country offices established in the organization’s history.
UNHCR’s work in Germany focuses on advocacy, policy guidance, and public engagement. These activities aim to ensure refugee protection remains grounded in international standards, and to foster collaboration with national, state, and local institutions, civil society, and refugee-led organizations. While the office does not directly manage refugee cases, it plays a crucial coordination and support role across the country.
