From a small grant to a growing business: Mahmoud’s entrepreneurial journey in Jordan
From a vulnerable start as a daily construction worker after fleeing Deir ez-Zor, Mahmoud has transformed his life through determination and entrepreneurship, building a growing business in Jordan’s plastic recycling sector.
In 2024, with support from UNHCR and the Jordan River Foundation, Mahmoud received training and a small grant that enabled him to purchase a plastic shredding machine and launch his home‑based business. What began as a modest initiative in Madaba has since expanded into Al‑Furat Plastic Industries, now operating from a warehouse in Sahab, Amman, equipped with three shredding machines and sourcing materials from local factories. As the business grew, Mahmoud moved toward full independence, completed licensing procedures, and created job opportunities for both Syrian refugees and members of the host community. His profits have more than doubled, reflecting both the success and sustainability of the project.
With plans to expand into plastic granulation and eventually establish a branch in Syria to support reconstruction and job creation, Mahmoud continues to look ahead with ambition and purpose.
“Entrepreneurship is about seeing opportunity where others see nothing. I started with a simple idea, recycling plastic, and a small grant. Now, I run a factory and provide jobs for others. What I needed was not charity, but a chance to prove what I can do.”
