Guests and speakers at the SIDPIN & SPADS Launch

On 11 September 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria, the European Union (EU) in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UN-Habitat and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), launched two landmark initiatives Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria (SIDPIN) and Support for Protection, Assistance & Durable Solutions (SPADS) projects, aimed at supporting displaced and host communities in Northern Nigeria.

These projects underscore the EU’s strong commitment to fostering sustainable solutions for people affected by conflict and displacement.

Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria (SIDPIN)

Rebuilding Lives and Communities in Yobe, Adamawa, and Kano states

The SIDPIN project, implemented jointly by IOM, UNHCR and UN-Habitat, will reach nearly 29,000 people across the three states. The initiative focuses on strengthening local authorities and considering the needs of displaced communities into urban planning, including improved access to land, housing and essential services and promoting livelihoods and creating peaceful neighbourhoods through community-led approaches.

Support for Protection, Assistance & Durable Solutions (SPADS)

Building Inclusive and Resilient Communities in Sokoto

The SPADS project, implemented by the Danish Refugee Council, will assist over 30,500 people in Sokoto North and South, Local Government Areas. and will prioritize sustainable urban integration, with a special focus on supporting women, girls and people with disabilities.

Transforming Lives Through Partnership

The SIDPIN and SPADS projects will directly benefit nearly 30,000 displaced and host community members and will promote local integration, access to essential services and long-term peace and stability. The launch event brought together key government officials, development partners and community leaders, reinforcing a shared commitment to offer displaced and local people opportunities to find livelihoods and live together peacefully.

UNHCR extends its thanks to the European Union for the generous funding of these initiatives. This partnership is pivotal in driving forward efforts to build resilient communities and sustainable futures for displaced communities in northern Nigeria.
