The Power of Education: How I Found My Future Again
The Power of Education: How I Found My Future Again
Sandra in University of Tuscia, Italy
A Journey of Determination
When Sandra fled insecurity in her home country, she carried one dream with her — to continue her education.
That dream began to take shape in Nigeria through the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI) — a UNHCR scholarship programme that helps refugee students access higher education. With DAFI’s support, Sandra studied International Relations, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree.
Now, through the University Corridors for Refugees (UNICORE) initiative, also supported by UNHCR, Sandra has taken the next step in her academic journey. She recently travelled to Italy to begin a Master’s degree in Security and Human Right, continuing to build the future she once thought impossible.
Arriving in Nigeria in 2021, Sandra faced the challenges of starting over — a new country, limited resources, and uncertainty about the future. Yet she stayed focused on her dream to learn.
The DAFI scholarship gave her the foundation to begin again, covering her tuition and providing mentorship that strengthened her confidence. Through UNICORE, she found a bridge to continue her education abroad, where she could grow both personally and professionally.
Through both opportunities, Sandra gained far more than degrees — she found stability, confidence, and hope.
A proud moment as Sandra joins fellow students arriving in Italy to pursue higher education.
Her Words, Her Strength -
“Education gave me back my confidence and my voice,” says Sandra. “DAFI gave me the start I needed, and UNICORE opened a new chapter. Together, they helped me believe in my future again.”
A Story of Possibility
Sandra’s story is one of courage and hope — showing what happens when refugees are given the chance to learn and thrive. Her journey from Nigeria to Italy is proof that education can transform lives and open doors to a brighter future.
