The Berliner Philharmoniker, founded in 1882, are regarded worldwide as the epitome of musical excellence. The members come from more than 30 nations and thus embody the diversity of cultures and their cohesion. The integrative power of the musicians also radiates to the audience.

As musical ambassadors, the Berliner Philharmoniker have been supporting UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe, the German partner of UNHCR, since September 2021 in its commitment to helping refugees and opening up dignified prospects for their future.

Numerous concert evenings in the Philharmonie Berlin, as well as international concert tours and joint communication events, have been successfully used since the beginning of the partnership to appeal to the public for support and donations for refugees and to raise awareness of the situation of people forced to flee. An annual highlight is the traditional end-of-season open-air concert in front of more than 20,000 visitors and a nationwide television audience, during which the orchestra calls for solidarity with refugees worldwide by wearing the blue #WithRefugees ribbons and other supporting communicative activities.

Eva-Maria Tomasi, violinist and member of the orchestra board, says about their engagement: “As members of the Berliner Philharmoniker, we feel obliged to raise our musical voice for people who have been forced to flee their homes. Music transcends borders – it creates empathy and understanding. Together with UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe, we want to help refugees find protection, hope, and new perspectives.”
