In 2018, twenty years after closing its offices in 1998, UNHCR re-established its presence in Portugal. Portugal liaison office is covered by the UNHCR Representation for EU Affairs, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, The Netherlands and Portugal.
UNHCR focuses on advocacy and supports authorities and non-governmental institutions in delivering protection and solutions through technical support, capacity building and strategic advice on asylum, refugee and statelessness matters.
Portugal is a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention, Protocol, and UN Statelessness Conventions.
