In 2018, twenty years after closing its offices in 1998, UNHCR re-established its presence in Portugal.

UNHCR focuses on advocacy and supports authorities and non-governmental institutions in delivering protection and solutions through technical support, capacity building and strategic advice on asylum, refugee and statelessness matters.

Portugal is a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention, Protocol, and UN Statelessness Conventions.

The operations in Portugal are coordinated by the Belgium multi-country office.
