Refugee Speakers Programme

Refugee Speakers Programme

The Refugee Speakers Programme is run by UNHCR with support from TEDx. It gives people with refugee backgrounds the opportunity to develop their storytelling and public speaking skills. The programme aims to create space for stories that too often go unheard. When refugee situations are discussed, the focus is often on numbers. The numbers matter, but they do not tell the full story. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a life shaped by experiences of forced displacement.

Invite a Refugee Speaker

Are you a teacher or event organiser? Are you looking for ways to include speakers with refugee background in your work? All too often, discussions about forced displacement, migration and integration are about refugees rather than with refugees.

Through UNHCR’s Refugee Speakers Programme, UNHCR is in contact with a network of public speakers with refugee background who are open to sharing their own stories of fleeing and starting over.

Below, you will find bios of each of the speakers, information about their speaking preferences and a link to watch the personal story shared by the speaker during World Refugee Day 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025.

Biographies

Galyna

Lives now in Svedala in south of Sweden. Galyna shares how she has been forced to flee her home twice, and how the sense of security she once took for granted collapsed when the war began. As an internally displaced person in Ukraine, she encountered both compassion and harsh words from strangers who claimed she herself was to blame for what had happened to her. When she was forced to leave Ukraine in 2022 with her two children, she was entirely dependent on the help and goodwill of strangers.

Hamida

Hamida’s story begins in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan, where her father encouraged her to study before the family fled to Iran. When they later tried to cross from Iran to Turkey, they were stopped, and in the chaos her younger brother disappeared. Only several months later did the family learn that the eight-year-old boy was in Sweden. After arriving in Sweden, Hamida began handing out leaflets in a language she did not yet speak. Through the people she met at the Church of Sweden – including elderly individuals who helped her practice Swedish – her life took a new direction. Today, she is studying at Lund University.

Adam

Adam was forced to flee Sudan in 2015. In his story, he describes, among other things, his time in prison in Libya, where he was subjected to extreme violence and torture. When he received the news in 2022 that he would be coming to Sweden, he believed his suffering was over. But, as he puts it, the trauma remained in his body. He received care through the Red Cross Treatment Centre, where he now also works himself.

Judy

Judy worked in the humanitarian field for many years, including with UNHCR in her home country. In 2022, she was falsely accused in Syria and sentenced to death in absentia. She quickly learned Swedish, pursued her studies, and today works within the Red Cross.

Unfortunately, Faridah will not be able to attend the event on 15 January. After many years of waiting, she has finally been able to undergo surgery to treat injuries resulting from sexual violence she was subjected to in her home country. Her story is extremely powerful.
