27 November 2020

Filipinos are known for our brave, infectious smiles, even when times are difficult. What makes you smile, even in this pandemic?

For refugee children, it’s the chance to go to school, learn, make friends and access vital support networks. But almost half of all school age refugee children are out of school, meaning they are missing out on critical skills and opportunities for a stable and empowered future.

This is why UNHCR is partnering with online design platform, Canva, to raise much-needed funds for refugee education. #DesignForACause is an initiative that encourages creators from the Philippines and around the world to submit drawings of one thing that makes them smile.

Canva will select 200 winning designs and convert them into Canva graphics for sale, with all proceeds going directly to UNHCR to help improve access to a quality primary education for refugee children.

How to #DesignForACause

Entries for this campaign for a cause can be submitted through this page until December 8, 2020.

  1. Draw anything that makes you smile, on any medium.
  2. Upload your image by taking a photo or scanning your drawing and saving it as a PDF or JPEG.
  3. Submit your details using the online form. Drawings by children under the age of 13 will need to be submitted by their parents or guardians. If the child’s drawing is selected, the parent/legal guardian will be contacted for permission to share the child’s name as a winner.

A Creative Way to Extend Kindness

“We are delighted to work with Canva on this creative initiative to engage its growing users in the Philippines. During these fraught times when we are forced to physically distance, we find means to extend kindness in innovative ways. #DesignForACause taps into the creative talent of Filipinos that translates to supporting access to education for refugee children,” says Marmie Liquigan, Head of Private Sector Partnerships of UNHCR Philippines.

People who believe in creativity know that design can make a difference, whether it’s for a school report, a client presentation, or even a personal post on social media. With this campaign, Filipinos can channel their creativity to a good cause.

Head of Growth for Canva Philippines Maisie Littaua says, “Filipinos are innately creative and we’re known to have the value of malasakit in our DNA. With #DesignForACause, your creativity has the power to help school-age refugee children receive an education – which is something that every child deserves. We believe that this simple act of designing can go a long way in making a difference to the lives of the children, who hold the key to the future.”

Try your hand by submitting your uplifting and inspiring artwork here on or before December 8, 2020.
