On the occasion of World Refugee Day, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, hosted a reception to honour the resilience and talents of people who have found new hope and safety in Serbia. The event was attended by representatives of the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, the Ministry of Interior, other state institutions, international organizations, civil society and donor partners – demonstrating a collective commitment to supporting refugees in Serbia.
A culinary program brought together refugee and local chefs to prepare a fusion of traditional and contemporary dishes from Ukraine and Serbia highlighting the role of food in fostering community connections.
In line with the global WRD theme of solidarity, keynote speakers, the Serbian Commissioner for Refugees and the Deputy Director of Police of the Ministry of Interior, reiterated Serbia’s commitment to remain on this course.
In his address, Soufiane Adjali, UNHCR Representative in Serbia, stated:
“Let us not allow fear and misinformation to overpower our will to support refugees. Instead, let us amplify the message of compassion, solidarity, and hope.”
Amid ongoing conflicts, this year’s WRD brings yet another stark reminder of the staggering statistics of people forced to flee, as well as the need for urgent action by all actors involved.
