High Commissioner in Rwanda
High Commissioner Sadako Ogata is in Rwanda today, the third stop on her two-week, six-nation African mission. It is her eighth visit to Rwanda. Arriving from Nairobi, she was expected to visit Rwandan field sites this morning before travelling to Kigali, where she is scheduled to meet Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Saturday. Between 1994 and 1999, UNHCR spent $184 million on programmes in Rwanda. Our budget in Rwanda has declined from a high of $53.5 million in 1997 to $20 million last year. The current UNHCR programme in Rwanda is paying particular attention to meeting the needs of Rwandan women, many of whom head single-parent households. The High Commissioner travels to Burundi later on Saturday.
