Since 1992, UNHCR has supported forcibly displaced and stateless people in Slovenia by promoting access to protection, inclusion, and durable solutions through close collaboration with authorities and partners.

Since 1992, UNHCR has partnered with Slovenian authorities to bolster national protection systems. A longtime party to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol – and, as of January 2025, to the 1961 Statelessness Convention – Slovenia guarantees access to territory, protection, social services and employment for people forced to flee.
UNHCR in Slovenia, together with its partners, delivers legal counselling and psychosocial support, fosters inclusion, raises public awareness, and pursues durable solutions for refugees, asylum-seekers and stateless persons. In 2024, it helped resume the national resettlement scheme – welcoming 50 refugees from Türkiye – and shaped Slovenia’s National Implementation Plan under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. In early 2025, its pilot education pathway enabled two Syrian refugees to start a Masters at EMUNI University in Piran. UNHCR also strengthened reception conditions, pressed for systematic identification and protection of unaccompanied and separated children, tackled trafficking risks and expanded social protection via local partnerships.
Having made substantial progress on all six of its Global Refugee Forum pledges, the Slovenian government – alongside UNHCR – remains focused on closing protection gaps and securing sustainable, long-term solutions for people forced to flee.
