UNHCR works closely with the Government of Canada to uphold a fair and efficient asylum system, ensuring asylum seekers have access to refugee status determination procedures and accurate information. Amid record numbers of asylum claims – including many arriving through irregular routes – Canada continues to adapt its policies while maintaining strong resettlement and protection commitments.
These include its pledge to resettle 40,000 Afghans and the provision of temporary residence to over 600,000 Ukrainians. UNHCR supports the full utilization of Canada’s resettlement spaces and the expansion of complementary pathways, such as labour mobility and family reunification.
As a global leader in refugee protection, Canada plays a critical role in strengthening asylum systems, broadening access to education for refugees, and advancing international cooperation. UNHCR remains committed to working with Canada to address growing protection needs, enhance public awareness, and ensure durable solutions for displaced people worldwide.
