UNHCR has maintained a continuous presence in Ireland since 1998, working to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees, asylum-seekers, and stateless persons. We provide guidance, training, and support to authorities, promote alignment with international standards, and offer assistance to individuals and those working on their behalf.
In 2024, Ireland’s asylum system experienced significant strain due to a record number of new applications. UNHCR supported efforts to scale up system capacity, including training 433 decision-makers, auditing 317 decisions, and contributing to legal proceedings that reaffirmed the right to adequate living standards. Educational pathways were strengthened, with scholarships offered to refugees through Irish universities, and community sponsorship initiatives expanded in collaboration with civil society.
The Irish Refugee Resettlement Programme, operational since 2000 in partnership with UNHCR, continued to provide protection to refugees unable to return home due to war or persecution. UNHCR also advanced legal reform, promoted statelessness determination, and ensured that gender, diversity, and trauma-informed approaches were embedded in national systems to protect and include forcibly displaced people.
