Republic of Türkiye

Since 1960, UNHCR has worked in close partnership with the Republic of Türkiye on asylum and refugee issues. This collaboration was further formalized with the signing of a Host Country Agreement on 1 September 2016, reinforcing long-standing cooperation.

In Türkiye, UNHCR’s key areas of focus include:

• supporting institutional and legislative efforts to strengthen the national asylum system through capacity-building initiatives, to ensure access to quality, fair, and efficient procedures in line with international law and the national legal framework
• enhancing the protection environment and facilitating access to national social support mechanisms and services for those in need of international protection
• collaborating with national authorities, development partners and the private sector to facilitate the socio-economic inclusion of refugees alongside the host community, including through facilitating access to livelihood and education
• facilitating suitable and sustainable solutions for refugees based on their individual needs, including through resettlement and complementary pathways
• supporting the Government of Türkiye in monitoring and ensuring that voluntary returns to Syria are carried out in a safe, dignified, and informed manner, in line with international standards
• leading and coordinating the efforts of UN agencies and civil society partners in support of Türkiye’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis.
