Togo
Togo hosts refugees and asylum-seekers primarily from Burkina Faso under an out-of-camp policy, with UNHCR supporting protection, documentation, and inclusion efforts in coordination with the government and partners.
Togo hosts thousands of refugees and asylum-seekers, the majority from Burkina Faso, many of whom reside with host families under an out-of-camp policy.
In 2024, the country faced security challenges due to non-state armed group attacks, impacting humanitarian access and the registration of new arrivals. Despite these difficulties, the government, supported by UNHCR, advanced protection efforts, including biometric registration, legal documentation, and a simplified asylum process that enabled group recognition of Burkinabé refugees.
UNHCR also promoted economic inclusion through savings groups, agricultural cooperatives, and women’s empowerment initiatives, while investing in gender-based violence prevention and community engagement. Advocacy for durable solutions and integration remains central to UNHCR’s work in Togo.
