Portrait of Nimi Nanji-Simard

Ms. Nimi Nanji-Simard is a renowned fashion designer, creator, and social entrepreneur dedicated to strengthening communities and advancing positive social change. Through her professional and philanthropic endeavours, she supports humanitarian, health, education, and cultural initiatives in Canada and internationally.

Her commitment is rooted in both her family history and lived experience as a refugee. In 1972, Ms. Nanji-Simard and her family arrived in Canada as refugees after being rendered stateless following their expulsion from Uganda. Their successful resettlement facilitated by UNHCR and a Canadian humanitarian airlift, instilled a deep sense of gratitude and a strong determination to give back to the country that offered them refuge, while supporting refugees and other forcibly displaced people worldwide.

Ms. Nanji-Simard continues this legacy, including through her support for UNHCR across multiple initiatives, with a particular focus on higher education programmes empowering refugee youth to realize their potential and build brighter futures. She is also a dedicated advocate for people forced to flee their homes.

In recognition of her outstanding commitment and generous support, Ms. Nanji-Simard was awarded the honorary title of UNHCR Patron in November 2025.
